«A very nutritious yet light drink that provides a whole meal. Wheat milk is particularly well known among yogis and athletes in India. One variation is ‘fir milk’. It is a wonderful way to integrate food from the wild in winter. Wonderful with ancient wheat grains.»
Ingredients
- ~ 80-100 g ancient wheat kernels (e.g. khorasan)
- A handfuls of fine fir or pine branches or needles
- ~ 1 litre of water
- Optional: dates, cedar nuts, fresh ginger root, …
Preparation
- Soak the grains for 10-20 hours until they are soft (it depends on the season and the type of grain)
- Rinse the grains well and place them in a blender
- Check the fir twigs for insects, cut into pieces (approx. 3-4 cm long), remove any coarse stems and add them to the blender
- Add other ingredients as desired
- Cover everything with cold water and blend for 30 seconds (on medium speed)
- Add more (possibly handwarm) water up to the 1 litre mark and blend again briefly
You can add less water to keep it thicker - Strain through a fine sieve and drink while fresh
Tips
Replacing approx. ¼ of the grains with rye produces an extra creamy milk
Add a few cedar nuts for a creamy flavour
Homemade oat or nut milk (e.g. made from tigernuts, almonds or hazelnuts) is just as easy
Important
I usually use fir (larch and pine would certainly also have a very interesting flavour). Grating the needles immediately produces a typical fir tree odour.
-> Only harvest the side shoots on the branch, otherwise you will disturb the growth of the tree. <-
Yew, on the other hand, is poisonous. It can be recognised by its shiny, soft needles and rubbing the needles does not produce the typical ‘Christmas tree’ smell. The bark of the yew tree is smooth and reddish in young trees, in older trees it begins to peel off in ‘shreds’. If you are unsure, take a look at a few pictures or explanatory videos beforehand.
Infos
Soaking grains & nuts:
We soak grains and nuts, so they become light and fresh and can easily be used in the rawfood diet. It makes them soft and clean. Just like cooking, but without all the dissenting side-effects. The flavour also changes – a hazelnut suddenly tastes like it has just been picked from the tree 🙂
Grains in the rawfood diet:
Grains are very important for a balanced raw food diet. In addition, grains can be stored very well and can therefore nourish you throughout the winter. Grains keep you full for a long time and warm you up from the inside out. Grains provide strenght and intelligence. Grains can be stored hundreds of years without loosing their potential to grow. They are full and complete within themselves and store the structure of the human body within. Grains mirror the universe, which mirrors the soul.
